SRTA Event - Peter Viney

The Southern Regional Teachers' Association (SRTA) was delighted to welcome the author and former teacher
Anglo-Continental teacher, Peter Viney, to the school on Wednesday 27 January 2010.
Peter delivered a fast track talk titled, “GETTING UP TO SPEED IN READING …” which dealt with some of the issues raised in the EFL classroom when students who do not use the roman alphabet in their first language have trouble with their reading skills. Peter spoke about basic “code-cracking” techniques and materials which will rapidly improve the decoding speed of all students in this situation, and which can also be used to teach initial reading of the Roman alphabet to adults.
Peter Viney started his teaching career at Anglo-Continental in 1971. We were delighted to welcome him back to celebrate the success of his latest book: Fast Track to Reading, published by Garnet Education, which has been shortlisted for the British Council's ELTons 2010 UK award for innovation.
Introduction to Aviation English Programme

This new course is intended for people with limited knowledge of aviation, who are aiming to start their training for a career in the aviation industry. They may wish to become a pilot or an air traffic controller, or to be involved in airport administration, and need to have an overview of how the aviation world works. The special programme gives them an insight into the world of aviation and an understanding of some of its terminology, while improving their general English language at the same time.
The course provides a useful combination of intensive general English and aviation English tuition. The intensive programme, adopting an integrated skills approach, focuses on general English language development. The specialised component of the course concentrates on extending the trainee’s aviation English vocabulary, whilst also improving the receptive and productive language skills, using a range of topic areas within the context of aviation.

Homestay Event - December 2009

Anglo-Continental was pleased to welcome the winners of our homestay prize draw on Tuesday 15 December 2009. Mrs Lent, Mrs Finnemore, Mrs Casey, Mrs Burns and Mrs Merrit attended the event which took place in the Student Services Department of the campus. They were joined by the Managing Director Guido Schillig, the Student Administration Manager Julie Ali, Marketing Staff and Accommodation Staff. The event enabled families to talk with staff that they regularly speak to over the telephone, while enjoying some snacks and refreshments.
The lucky winners were selected at random out of a total of 250 families, all of which had been rated “excellent” or “very good” on the end of course questionnaires completed by our students at the end of their stay. Mr Schillig thanked the families for their outstanding efforts, rewarded them with gift vouchers and encouraged them to continue to work together with Anglo-Continental in the future to deliver an excellent homestay accommodation service for the many students who choose to come to the school throughout the year. Mr Schillig highlighted that where students stay is an integral part of the whole experience, which can be the difference between a student deciding to return to the U.K. or not.
