Owl news Staff Retirement - Lyn Becker-Clarke

Lyn

We are sad to report that Lyn will be retiring from full-time employment in the autumn of this year, after twenty-five years of service at Anglo-Continental.

Lyn has worked not only as a Welfare Assistant in Student Services but has also been actively involved in guiding coach excursions, assisting students at the airports when they arrive and depart and also viewing homestay families, hotels and rental properties.

Lyn will especially miss the lovely family atmosphere at Anglo-Continental and all the staff that she has worked with over the years.  She has derived a great deal of satisfaction from helping students resolve their different problems and doing as much as she can to make their stay in Bournemouth more enjoyable.  The work has always been very varied and interesting and there has never been a dull moment!

She would recommend the school to any prospective student, not just because she has worked here for such a long period of time, but because of the stability of the structure and excellent teamwork between all the departments.

We wish Lyn a happy retirement and hope that she will continue to be involved with Anglo-Continental on a part-time basis, as we are going to greatly miss her expertise!

Owl news Upcoming Events in Bournemouth

Flowers by Candlelight
On 20 and 27 August - Come along to the gardens in Bournemouth and light candles inside hundreds of coloured glass jars, using special tapers to protect your fingers. Candles are lit at dusk. Flowers by Candlelight dates back to 1896 and was started by Princess Eugenie of France. The Princess visited Bournemouth and she was welcomed by an illumination of candles on her route through the gardens.

Owl news Bournemouth is the Place to Study English

A recent newspaper reports that an increasing number of language students are coming to Bournemouth and local residents say:

“Get over to Charminster Road south, and enjoy an evening in a multi cultural environment, and speak to a number of the students. You could learn something.”

“I hope we get more to the town.”

“We have foreign students staying with us each summer and they have all been fantastic. They are keen to learn, eager to please, (always offering to cook an authentic meal from their country) and they are some of the politest teenagers around.”

“The advantage of having a student stay is you make friends, sometimes for life.”

Owl news Remember, Remember the 5th November - Guy Fawkes Night

In 1605, a man called Guy Fawkes and a group of plotters attempted to blow up the houses of Parliament in London with barrels of gunpowder. Every year on 5 November we light bonfires with a homemade model of a man on the top, and enjoy fireworks to celebrate the fact that the gunpowder plot failed!! Why not enjoy a fireworks display while you are in England?

Enjoy a great evening of fireworks and entertainment at the following events!
5 November – Canford Park Arena and Poole Quay
8 November – Littledown Centre.
