Executive Centre Presentation

One of Anglo-Continental's Executive students, Reimund Ryll, gave a presentation in the Executive Centre on Thursday 29 July 2010, which focused upon a recent renovation project carried out by his company, Buhler. "Project Marathon" was completed in only three years and was hailed as a great success, as the project was carried out within its specified time frame and exceeded expectations. The renovations resulted in brand new work and customer areas and also opened up the site to the public, by offering passers-by the opportunity to see the historical factory wall, shown in the picture above, which is listed by the German government.
Mr. Ryll chose to give this presentation, which is an optional part of his course (E-2.40: Intensive Study in a Mini Group plus Individual Tuition), as it allowed him the opportunity to create a presentation in English, which he can show to both his company and to clients when he returns to work after his course is completed.
Southern Regional Teachers' Association Event

On Wednesday 9 June 2010, Anglo-Continental hosted a talk by Sue Kay in conjunction with Macmillan and the Southern Regional Teachers' Association (SRTA). Sue Kay works at the Lake School of English in Oxford and is the author of the Reward Resource Packs and Inside Out course books. Ms. Kay's talk focused on authenticity in English language tuition and practical ideas for developing students' language skills by encouraging learners to talk about subjects that actually matter to them, rather than playing roles or exchanging invented information in class.
Teacher Feature: Spotlight on Phillip Bashford

Phillip Bashford has worked at Anglo-Continental for six years and holds various roles at the school, including: CELTA trainer; Aviation rater; Young Learners teacher support and English language teacher. Phillip specialises in CELTA and teacher training and holds a diploma, a degree in English language and is Cambridge CELTA trainer approved.
One of Phillip's most interesting teaching experiences to date was a period of time spent in Russia, training teachers to become aviation raters. Phillip has also worked in Angola, carrying out aviation tests.
Phillip says that teaching at Anglo-Continental offers him the opportunity to meet lots of different nationalities and cultures and enables him to develop as a person through others. The most important advice that Phillip can offer to new students is not to be afraid to make mistakes in class - as this is the best way to learn!
Retirement of Nigel Taylor, Anglo-Continental Teacher

On 2 July 2010, Nigel Taylor retired after working for 33 years as a teacher at Anglo-Continental. He was presented with an Apple Ipad by Managing Director Guido Schillig, in honour of his retirement from the school.
Nigel was extremely popular with both the students and staff at Anglo-Continental and he specialised in teaching beginner and elementary classes. Furthermore, Nigel planned and taught the Computer Skills course at the school and wrote the majority of the initial grammar and vocabulary CALL programmes for Anglo-Continental's Multi-Media Learning Centre (MMLC).
Nigel plans to catch up with old friends during his retirement and to generally take things easy!
Changes to the Points Based System (PBS)

English UK, the professional body for British Council accredited English language schools, won a judicial review against the UK Border Agency (UKBA) on 9 July 2010. The ruling stated that the UKBA could not introduce substantial changes to the Tier 4 Points Based System (PBS) by simply changing the Guidance for Tier 4 sponsors. Instead, any substantial changes will need to be passed by Parliament.
This victory resulted in a temporary drop of the minimum required language level for students applying for visas under the Tier 4 (General) Student route (from B1 CEFR to A1 CEFR). However, the B1 CEFR minimum language level requirement has since been reinstated through Parliament, with effect from 23 July 2010.
Applications from students wishing to enrol on a course at A2 CEFR level will be accepted by the UKBA, as long as the CAS was assigned before 23 July 2010. Further information can be found by visiting the UK Border Agency website: http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk.

The sun shone brightly and the students had great fun taking part in all of the games!
On Thursday 29 July, Anglo-Continental held an Oriental Day. Students performed activities such as morning exercises, singing, reciting poems, flute and violin playing. Oriental refreshments were provided and students were given the opportunity to try activities including calligraphy, origami and traditional painting.
