Anglo-Continental ICAO Courses
At its training centre in Bournemouth, England, the
Anglo-Continental Aviation English Division provides
intensive English Language courses to meet this
need. For safety in flight operations,
pilots and controllers must have a command of
general English combined with specialised language
and R/T communication skills at a High Intermediate
standard - but many are currently well below that
level. We therefore provide comprehensive training
at all levels of the ICAO scale.

Proficiency Test at
end of course) |
Aviation personnel at ICAO Level 5 (Extended) must
be re-tested every six years, while those at Level 6
(Expert) are not required to take any further
tests. The Aviation English Division provides
courses for specialists at these levels, if and when
required, by special arrangement.

Duration of training
It must be accepted that there is no quick and easy
way to learn English for Aviation and it is very
difficult to accurately predict how long an
individual trainee may require to reach a specified
level. As a general rule, however, it is our
experience that an able, well motivated trainee with
a European mother-tongue may require some 12 to 16 weeks of
intensive training to move from one ICAO English
language level to the next - and perhaps 8 to 12
weeks for the transition from Level 3 to Level 4.
Depending on the nature and complexity of their
native languages, their linguistic ability and other
factors, trainees from other parts of the world may
require more time.
For reasons of cost, staffing
priorities and other work-related factors, some
trainees may be unable to undertake all the English
language training they require in a single year.
It may be practical in such cases to schedule a
series of shorter courses taken over two or three
years. leading to attainment of ICAO Level 4 and
completion of the approved Test before March 2008.
For
avoidance
of doubt, before enrolment
for a course with Anglo-Continental, Aviation
trainees should complete our Aviation English
Pre-Entry Test, which will assist us in advising how
much training they might need to achieve their
learning objectives.
COURSE
CONTENT |
Our specialist English language teachers combine
with Aviation professionals to provide enjoyable,
practical instruction with a high level of trainee
participation. All tuition is in English, and a
wide range of teaching methods and materials is used
to stimulate interest, increase the speed of
learning and achieve the highest level of
retention. We concentrate on achieving an
effective balance of linguistic skills (listening,
reading, speaking and writing) with the emphasis on
clear, accurate oral communication.
Module 1 provides intensive general English tuition
at the Elementary level.
Module 2, while still
concentrating on structure and usage, listening
comprehension and oral communication, introduces
English in a general Aviation context in preparation
for the final phase.
Module 3, moving towards a
High Intermediate level, includes intensive tuition
in Aviation English with the emphasis on R/T
Phraseology.

Progress Monitoring and Reporting
Our teachers work closely with the Aviation Training
Coordinator and the Director of Studies in the
monitoring of each individual's progress.
Progress
tests are conducted at appropriate intervals
throughout the course, and trainees are graded
according to the
ICAO 6-point scale.
Detailed reports are normally submitted to the
trainees' sponsors or employers at the end of the
course - or earlier if a trainee's performance gives
cause for concern. In longer programmes (18 weeks
or more) interim progress reports may be provided at
intervals agreed with the Sponsor.
proficiency Testing
Trainees who are deemed to have reached ICAO Level 4
in General English, Aviation English and
Radiotelephony (with consistent levels of
Pronunciation, Structure, Vocabulary, Fluency,
Comprehension and Interaction) should normally take
a proficiency test approved by ICAO, such as
Eurocontrol's PELA Test, as near as possible to the
end of the course.
(Notes on examination arrangements are published
separately).
Immersion in the English-speaking environment
If it can be arranged, training in an
English-speaking country makes learning faster, more
enjoyable and more effective. Listening to English
and speaking practice can continue round the clock,
and learning something of the culture that lies
behind the language greatly helps.
Anglo-Continental's comprehensive programme of
excursions, sports and leisure activities adds
another dimension to the trainees' courses, and
films, lectures and other educational activities
still further increase the speed and breadth of
learning.
