Foundation in English Language Teaching

The Course
Each Saturday morning session will focus on different
aspects of language awareness, classroom
management, lesson planning and the methodology of
teaching the four language skills of speaking, listening,
reading and writing. Instruction methods will include
trainer presentations, trainee presentations, group work
and discussions, together with homework in the form of
short research projects.
On the final Saturday, trainees will take the Cambridge
TKT module in 'Language background to language
learning and teaching'. This is a multiple choice test
which will grade your knowledge. Results are reported
in 4 bands:
Band 1 - Limited knowledge of TKT areas
Band 2 - Basic but systematic knowledge of TKT areas
Band 3 - Breadth and depth of knowledge of TKT areas
Band 4 - Extensive knowledge of TKT areas. It tests a
candidate's knowledge of the language
systems needed by teachers for planning and
teaching their lessons and tests knowledge of
how the different features of English work from
a teaching perspective. The test also focuses
on the teacher's awareness of the language
needs of learners and the difficulties involved
in learning a second language.
Course Dates 2010
Saturday 30 October - Saturday 27 November 2010
The course runs for 5 consecutive Saturdays 09.30
- 12.45 hours and gives you a firm grounding in
Language Awareness and Teaching Methodology.
Combined with the Cambridge ESOL Teaching
Knowledge Test module in Knowledge About Language
(TKT KAL) it may help you to get a teaching post in a
school that does not require the CELTA (Cambridge
Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults)
qualification. Above all it provides excellent preparation for the CELTA,
particularly for those with little knowledge of English
language terms and concepts, or classroom experience.

recognised ELT qualification such as the Cambridge

Foundation in ELT is intended as preparation for further
training. Schools which are not recognised may accept
evidence of participation on the FELT as sufficient for
temporary work, although this cannot be guaranteed.
Important note
Completion of the Foundation in ELT does not guarantee
acceptance on the Anglo-Continental CELTA course. A
separate application and interview will be required.
CELTA Course Discount
Students who attend a FELT Course will receive a £100 discount if they enrol on a CELTA Course within one year.
