The Cambridge Certificate in English
Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA)
The CELTA Qualification
CELTA is the essential qualification for native English Teachers entering the English Language Teaching profession. The course does not assume any previous teaching experience. The scheme is administered by the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations which ensures that the regulations and fundamental aims of the scheme are implemented. Anglo-Continental is an approved centre for CELTA courses.
Any CELTA candidates with specialist aviation or oil and gas knowledge, who would be prepared to teach part-time on English courses for these subjects,
may be eligible for part or full payment of their CELTA course fees. Please contact us for further details.

Course Details
The CELTA course covers the basic principles of teaching vocabulary, grammar, phonology, speaking, listening, reading and writing, as well as how to correct students’ errors and how to manage the class. Of course, you will learn many other things, but these are the basic areas of language teaching.
Full-time Course
The full-time course lasts for 4 weeks and consists of 120 hours of instruction, observation and teaching practice programmed between 0845 and 1700 hours, Monday to Friday, and up to 120 hours of home study, lesson planning and assignment writing.
Part-time Course
The part-time course lasts for 16 weeks and consists of 120 hours of instruction, observation and teaching practice programmed between 16.30 - 20.30 hours, on Wednesdays and Thursdays, and up to 120 hours of home study, lesson planning and assignment writing. All participants will also be required to observe 3 x 90 minute lessons at Anglo-Continental which take place in the mornings.
Teaching Methods
Your tutors will use a variety of methods and techniques. You will have input from your tutors in the mornings and you will teach, observed by your tutor, in the afternoons. You will also have the opportunity to observe the lessons of practising, professional teachers.
Assessment
You are assessed continuously and your tutors will always tell you how you are doing. You do not take an examination. There are three components of the assessment:
 |
Written Assignments
To pass the course you must pass the written component. There are four assignments, totalling approximately 3000 words. They are spread over the course to ease the workload, and are in a variety of formats. If you fail an assignment, your tutor will give you guidance and you are allowed to re-submit it. |
 |
Teaching Practice
We hope to see you put into practice the things you have been shown in the morning. However, the course does not assume previous experience and we do not expect to see flawless lessons at the end of it! |
 |
Professional Development
You should remember that this is a professional qualification. Therefore you are expected to conduct yourself in a professional manner throughout the course. |
Applying for the CELTA Course
You should be at least 18 years old at the start of the course and have a level of education that would allow you to enter higher education.
