Owl newsProfessional Development Evening

SRTA

An audience of 45 teachers and teacher trainees enjoyed 2 stimulating and relevant workshops, led by Jeremy Harmer on Friday 29 August.

In the first workshop, he demonstrated through a number of tasks, how we all have different strengths – for example, although most of us could confidently complete a simple sequence of numbers, we became quiet and embarrassed as soon as the sequences became more challenging.  Some could happily ‘sing back’ a song after one listening, others shone at the task of imitating the hands of a clock to show different times.  Overall, we learnt that we have different ‘intelligences’ and need to remember that learners are not all the same either.  Some will enjoy pictures, role-play, games – others have different preferences.  It is the teacher’s job to ensure sufficient variety in our teaching in order to challenge and satisfy all!

After the break, we learnt about ‘the cuddle factor’ – a workshop which focused on how important it is, among other factors, to ensure that learners are able to engage with lexical items in order to remember them.

Always an engaging speaker, Jeremy made a lasting impression on us all, and sent the trainee teachers away with signed copies of his book and stars in their eyes.  Overall, it was a great start to our new organisation a sign of good things to come.

Owl news Staff Retirement - Lyn Becker-Clarke

Lyn

We are sad to report that Lyn will be retiring from full-time employment in the autumn of this year, after twenty-five years of service at Anglo-Continental.

Lyn has worked not only as a Welfare Assistant in Student Services but has also been actively involved in guiding coach excursions, assisting students at the airports when they arrive and depart and also viewing homestay families, hotels and rental properties.

Lyn will especially miss the lovely family atmosphere at Anglo-Continental and all the staff that she has worked with over the years.  She has derived a great deal of satisfaction from helping students resolve their different problems and doing as much as she can to make their stay in Bournemouth more enjoyable.  The work has always been very varied and interesting and there has never been a dull moment!

She would recommend the school to any prospective student, not just because she has worked here for such a long period of time, but because of the stability of the structure and excellent teamwork between all the departments.

Lyn will continue to work for Anglo-Continental on a part-time basis so that we can continue to benefit from the expertise she has acquired over the years.

Owl news Bournemouth is the Place to Study English

A recent newspaper reports that an increasing number of language students are coming to Bournemouth and local residents say:

“Get over to Charminster Road south, and enjoy an evening in a multi cultural environment, and speak to a number of the students. You could learn something.”

“I hope we get more to the town.”

“We have foreign students staying with us each summer and they have all been fantastic. They are keen to learn, eager to please, (always offering to cook an authentic meal from their country) and they are some of the politest teenagers around.”

“The advantage of having a student stay is you make friends, sometimes for life.”

Owl news Remember, Remember the 5th November - Guy Fawkes Night

In 1605, a man called Guy Fawkes and a group of plotters attempted to blow up the houses of Parliament in London with barrels of gunpowder. Every year on 5 November we light bonfires with a homemade model of a man on the top, and enjoy fireworks to celebrate the fact that the gunpowder plot failed!! Why not enjoy a fireworks display while you are in England?

Enjoy a great evening of fireworks and entertainment at the following events!
5 November – Canford Park Arena and Poole Quay
8 November – Littledown Centre.

Owl news Let Your English Grow Scholarship Winner

Anglo-Continental School for Young Learners provided a scholarship to Yu Run Sheng from China as part of the British Council's Let Your English Grow campaign.  Yu Run Sheng wrote the following about her experience of studying English at Anglo-Continental.

"It has long been my dream to come to this great land for a visit. How nice it is to realize my dream. How to describe my fantastic experience is really beyond me. I enjoy the variety and diversity so much, different people, different culture, wonderful classes and friendly classmates even the weather is so amazing.

I really should say thanks to those who give me a lot of help and care, especially Lu Chang, who has always been eager and ready to offer tips and give me some advice. Sure, Anglo-continental is such a great and wonderful place to learn English and make friends. I feel I benefited a lot from this exciting experience, not only knowledge but also horizon.

Something so wonderful is surprisingly true. At the moment, I feel I have to say bye to Anglo-Continental. But you will always remain in my fond memory. Thank you Anglo-Continental. Thank you all the teachers and staff. Thank you my friends from all parts of the world.
